The friendly town of Pompeii (modern Pompei is now spelt with one 'i') in close to Naples and was once a fair-sized city by Roman standards, with a population of around 20,000 people. Dating back to the 7th century BC, the city of Pompeii came under the power of the Romans in around 200 BC and was a lively, important city.

In the fateful year of 79 AD, Pompeii was sadly buried under the stones and ash when the Mount Vesuvius volcano erupted and after much looting, Pompeii was soon forgotten. Many of Pompeii's inhabitants had left by the time that Mount Vesuvius finally erupted and only around 10 percent of the city's population actually perished in this natural disaster.

In the 1600s, the ruins were discovered by engineers, digging an aqueduct in the area. Detailed excavations started in 1748 and a wealth of Pompeii history was soon dug up. These Pompeii artefacts these have proved invaluable to archaeologists, trying to learn more about historic Roman life.

Modern Pompei is within easy reach of Naples and contains many attractions, including the Antiquarium - with impressive works of art, the Forum - offering glorious views of Vesuvius, and the Macellum - a market decorated with frescoes. In 1980 Pompei suffered much damage after a severe earthquake and the city has taken many years to finally recover after the considerable damage.

Other attractions in modern Pompei include a Vesuvian Museum on Via Colle San Bartolomeo, which contains a wealth of interesting information about the famous volcano.
