Situated in the Spaccanapoli area of Naples, the Chiesa San Domenico Maggiore (Sansevero Chapel) is a truly grand masterpiece and the funerary chapel of the Sangro di Sansevero princes, who were famous military leaders in Italy.
Naples' Sansevero Chapel was created in 1590 by Giovan Francesco di Sangro and renovated between 1749 and 1770 by his descendant Raimondo di Sangro, who is responsible for the present appearance of this important Naples chapel.
The Sansevero family contained six saints, all of which are portrayed inside the Chiesa San Domenico Maggiore. Other attractions at the Sansevero Chapel include a wonderful marble-inlay floor, the painted ceiling 'Glory of Paradise' dating back to 1749, and many detailed stone statues and sculptures, such as Giuseppe Sammartino's famous 'Veiled Christ' (1753), one of the most famous sculptures in the whole of Naples.
